In a Comment/Opinion article in Nature Ecology and Evolution (DOI: 10.1038/s41559-017-0265-9), the argument for evolutionary infectious disease management is made.

In a Comment/Opinion article in Nature Ecology and Evolution, Colin A. Russell and Menno D. de Jong (of COMPARE Work Package 3/6, Analytical workflows for frontline diagnostics) make an argument that we need to employ evolutionary thinking to manage infectious disease.

The article, ‘Infectious disease management must be evolutionary’, was published in Nature Ecology and Evolution, Volume 1, Number 8. The authors identify four points  about management of infectious disease. One should review the evolutionary fitness landscape, use global sharing of data, consider infections with regard to host evolution, and use evolutionary biology in the settings of clinics.

The ‘Collaborative management platform for detection and analyses of (re-) emerging and foodborne outbreaks in Europe’ project (COMPARE) is set up with the common vision to become the enabling analytical framework and globally linked data and information sharing platform for the rapid identification, containment and mitigation of emerging infectious diseases and foodborne outbreaks. The system sets out to integrate state-of-the-art strategies, tools, technologies and methods for collecting, processing and analyzing sequence-based pathogen data in combination with associated (clinical, epidemiological and other) data, for the generation of actionable information to relevant authorities and other users in the human health, animal health and food safety domains.
