The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo) is one of the oldest Veterinary Schools in the world. It has approximately 2.000 veterinary and 500 biology students. It counts 5 clinics, 15 institutes and two research and teaching centres. The annual research budget is about 62.5 Mio €, 51.02 Mio € of it being state money. Research at the TiHo is dedicated to the welfare of animals and humans. The main areas of research are infection medicine, neurosciences, food sciences and clinical research of individual animals. Of particular interest is the Center of Infection Medicine and Zoonoses Research and the Research Network “Niedersachsen-Research Network on Neuroinfectiology (N-RENNT). In September, 2003, two centers were established to promote biomedical research focussing on infection biology and neurosciences: the virtual Centre for Systems Neuroscience (ZSN) and the Centre for the Biology of Infections (ZIB). These centers offer international postgraduate training programmes leading to the PhD. The Department of Pathology of the TiHo is intensively involved in the academic under- and postgraduate training of veterinarians and contributes to the PhD programmes offered by the TiHo Graduate School for Veterinary Pathobiology, Neuroinfectiology and Translational Medicine. The Department has a long lasting experience in the diagnosis of diseases of small and large domestic animals as well as zoo and wild life animals and marine mammals. Besides solid morphological diagnoses advanced detection systems for various pathogens have been developed and are applied routinely. In addition it runs a very extensive research program on viral diseases and viral pathogenesis by using a various state-of-the-art tools such as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Viruses in the focus include morbilliviruses, circoviruses, BoCa viruses, Schmallenberg virus and Theilerviruses.
