Statens Serum Institut (SSI) is a public enterprise under the Danish Ministry of Health. For more than 100 years SSI’s main task has been to secure the preparedness towards infectious diseases and congenital disorders. SSI aims to ensure advanced control of infectious diseases, including new infections and biological threats. SSI is a highly regarded and recognized national and international research, production and service enterprise with 1300 employees. The Department of Microbiology and Infection Control has international recognized expertise in research as well as diagnostics and surveillance of bacterial and parasitic infections. The department houses several international reference laboratories, including the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Escherichia and Klebsiella. The Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology is responsible for the national surveillance of infectious diseases and is scientifically active within epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases. These departments represent Denmark in EU committee networks and are part of a number of surveillance networks.
